SKIN CARE TIPS TO FOLLOW THIS SUMMER

SKIN CARE TIPS TO FOLLOW THIS SUMMER

As summer rolls around, it may be time to switch up your skincare routine for the upcoming months! Think about it: the seasons, temperature, and your daily lifestyle changes, which means the way your skin reacts is going to change as well. Our outer layer is heavily influenced by our external environment, therefore now is a good time to change up a few things in your daily skincare routine.

How Does Summer Affect Your Skin?

Let’s start off by uncovering how the summer season affects our skin. Summer months have higher temperatures and humidity levels, which causes our skin’s sebaceous glands to start producing excess sebum (natural oil) that gets stuck under the surface of our skin. This means our pores get clogged up and results in uneven texture, blocked pores, and for many people, acne.

Another summer effect is the increase in melanin production due to sun damage from overexposure to UV rays. This can lead to itchy skin, sunburns, rashes, and over time possibly skin cancer.

Protecting Your Skin

1. Lighten Up Your Skin Care Routine

You don’t wear lots of layers during the summer, so think the same way when it comes to your skin. Go ahead and skip cleansing your face in the mornings, then opt for a light, non abrasive cleanser to wash away dirt and oil at the end of the day. The more you cleanse your skin, the more oil you’re going to produce to make up for the extra wash, so be light with your cleansing routine.

2. Use More Antioxidants

Incorporate antioxidant serums to hydrate your skin: they protect your skin from environmental damage, help to boost collagen, and combat free radicals to prevent damage to skin. You can also add it into your diet by stocking up on citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, green tea, etc.

3. Hydration

Keeping your skin hydrated is key to fresh, clear looking skin. Drink water throughout the day, use a hydrating mask at night, and keep a water facial mist in your bag to spritz on your face during the day.

4. Exfoliate

Summer means more oil, sunscreen, and clogged pores, so exfoliating is important to combat breakouts. Avoid harsh physical exfoliators (ones with small beads or grains) in the summer because this can cause more irritation than you started with. Aim for chemical exfoliators, such as Glycolic Acid, which can be more gentle on your skin. Just be sure to talk to your dermatologist before mixing certain chemicals (such as retinol) which can lead to irritation and sensitivity.

5. Avoid Heavy Makeup

Just as we said to lighten up your skin care routine, do the same for your makeup routine. Less is more during the summer months, so opt for a tinted moisturizer instead of heavy foundation!

6. Wear Sunscreen

This one is probably the most obvious skin care tip (and something you should be using every day of the year). Naturally, you’ll be in the sun more during the summer so it’s a good idea to stock up on your SPF (we recommend SPF 30 or higher) and reapply every 2 hours. Don’t forget the small or hard to reach areas such as the back of your neck, tops of hands, scalp, ears, etc.

7. Wear UPF50+ Clothing

The best way to protect your skin from sun damage is by avoiding the exposure all together. We love the outdoors, so our favorite way to stay safe in the sun is to cover up in Tutublue’s sun protective swimsuits. The UPF will block out harmful UVB and UVA rays from reaching your skin, plus it’s built into the weave of the fabric so it won’t wash out.

8. Focus On A Healthier Diet

Drink more water to stay hydrated and include seasonal fruits and vegetables to cool your body from the inside out.Additionally, stay away from sugary drinks as they can make you feel sluggish from the excess sugar, and they have no hydrating qualities.
