How To Stay Healthy and Fit During Summer

The (official) start to summer is just a few days away, which means longer days, sunshine, picnics, barbecues, and pool days are as well! Summer is the best season to get outdoors with your loved ones, and we collected some of the best ideas for you to stay healthy and fit while still having fun.

Be Active, But Stay Cool

Staying active in every season is extremely important and the summer months are the perfect time to get the entire family involved! Kids aren’t in school, so take advantage of this time and plan some family excursions to get your bodies moving. Of course, just be mindful of how hot the summer months are and take precautions so you don’t overheat.

  • Drink plenty of water. Water helps your body cool down, so don’t wait until you're thirsty to take a sip…take small sips of water throughout your exercise.
  • Go for a hike, bike ride, a walk, etc in the morning or the evening, when the sun isn't at its highest and strongest.
  • Wear lightweight, UPF50+ clothing to keep your skin safe from the sun. Many times if you’re working hard or having fun while out in the sun, you forget to reapply sunscreen and don’t realize that you’re burning. Tutublue’s suits are breathable so you won’t overheat, and you’ll be blocking out 98% of UV rays.
  • Get the entire family involved and plan an active vacation that’s centered around camping, hiking, canoeing, snorkeling, etc. These types of vacations are always so much for the entire family, and you’ll be getting everyone fit and active instead of laying out all day long!

Eat Good Food

The good thing about summer is that light and fresh food is usually what sounds appetizing when you’re in the sun all day. Refreshing salads, fruits, berries are all yummy foods to snack on throughout the day to keep you energized and cool. Because of the higher temperatures, there’s also some precautions you need to take to make sure you’re not eating spoiled food.

  • Cook food the same day of the picnic, not the day before.
  • Keep mayonnaise-based foods, cold foods, and dairy products in the fridge or an insulated cooler.
  • Throw out leftovers that have been sitting out for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is over 90°)
  • Use one set of utensils and plates for raw foods and another set for cooked foods

Stay Safe In The Sun

The more time you spend outside in the sun, the higher your risk of skin cancer is. You can, however, greatly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer by covering up the correct way!

  • Wear UPF50+ suits that block out 98% of UVA and UVB rays. Tutublue’s suits have the protection built into the weave of the fabric (vs a chemical) so that the protection never washes out. We offer a vast collection of suits for women, men, and children to protect you while you’re out in the sun.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen for all the areas that your UPF50+ suit isn’t covering. This means your ears, face, scalp, tops of hands and feet, chest, back, etc! Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
  • Seek shade as much as possible, especially between 10 am and 2 pm when the sun is at its strongest.
